Что-то меня не в ту степь понесло (т.к. сайт посвящен, преимущественно, птицам-компаньонам), но раз уж речь зашла о кукушках, то вот еще до кучи:

Avian Flight

John J. Videler
Oxford University Press 2005
ISBN 0198566034
258 pages

Bird flight has always intrigued mankind. This book pres an up to date account of our existing knowledge on the subject, as well as offering new insights and challenging some established views.
A brief history of the science of flight introduces the basic physical principles governing aerial locomotion. A treatment of flight-related functional morphology concentrates on the difference in shape of the arm and hand part of the wings, on the structure and function of tails, and on the shape of the body. The anatomy and mechanical properties of feathers receive special attention. Aerodynamic principles used by birds are explained in theory by simply applying Newton's laws, and in practice by showing the direction and velocity of the attached flow around an arm wing cross section and of the leading edge vortex flow above a hand wing. The Archaeopteryx fossils remain crucial in our understanding of the evolution of bird flight despite the recent discovery of a range of well-preserved ancient birds.
A novel insight into the interactions between wings and air challenges established theories relating to the origin of bird flight. Take-off, flapping flight, gliding and landing are the basic ingredients of bird flight, and birds use a variety of flight styles from hovering to soaring. Flight muscles consisting of mosaics of specialized fibers are the engines that generate the force required to keep the wings and tail in the gliding configuration and perform work during flapping motion. The energy required to fly can be estimated or measured directly, and a comparison of empirical results pres insights into the trend in metabolic costs of flight of birds varying in shape and mass from hummingbirds to albatrosses.

Parrot

(Animal Series)
Paul Carter
Publisher: Reaktion Books Ltd, 2006
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1861892373
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781861892379
Number Of Pages: 213

Paul Carter's Parrot is a fascinating natural and cultural history of parrots. It covers three broad areas: 'Parrotics' - the historical, cultural and scientific classifications of parrots; 'Parroternalia' - the association of parrots with the different language, ages, tastes and dreams of society; and 'Parrotology' - the mimicry of parrots and what that can tell us about our own systems of communication. Highly illustrated, with images drawn from a wide range of cultures, historical periods and media, "Parrot" is a humorous roller-coaster ride through parrots in literature, jokes, folklore, mythology, film, TV, and children's stories worldwide, as well as discussing parrot conservation, talking bird experiments and parrot portraiture. This book differs from previous histories, which have treated parrots as subjects of curiosity and a pretext for elegy. A new kind of animal history, "Parrot" is philosophical and poetic. It takes seriously the critical and ironic mirror that parrots hold up to human society. Humorously written and wide-ranging in scope, "Parrot" will have wide appeal, and will be of interest to parrot enthusiasts and specialists, as well scholars of animals in culture

Peacock

(Animal Series)
Christine E. Jackson
Publisher: Reaktion Books Ltd, 2006
ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1861892934
ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781861892935
Number Of Pages: 192

The first record of a peacock in the Middle East, taken there from its homeland in the Indus Valley, was when King Solomon imported them c. 950 BC. The story of the peacock spread westwards and its impact on different countries is both surprising and fascinating. Peacocks became the subject of fairy stories, legends, fables, myths and superstitions. Images of peacocks have appeared in mosaics, frescoes, paintings from illuminated manuscripts through to modern graphics, and in the 19th century they represented opulence, luxury and vibrant beauty in the artefacts created by the Arts and Crafts, the Aesthetic and the Art Nouveau movements' craftsmen in glass, ceramics, metalwork, jewellery and other materials. The feathers of peacocks have been used in head-dresses, hats and helmets, to fletch arrows and to tie artificial flies for fishermen. This is the first book to bring together all the facets of the peacock including natural and social history, its role in religions and mythology in the east and west, and its place in the history of art and artefacts

Falcon

(Animal Series)
Helen Macdonald
Publisher: Reaktion Books Ltd, 2006
ISBN-10: 1861892381
ISBN-13: 978-1861892386
Number Of Pages: 208

The fastest animal on earth, the falcon deserves attention not just for the combination of speed, power, beauty and ferocity that have made it an object of fascination for thousands of years, but for the light it sheds on the cultures through which it has flown. This book, bridging science and cultural history, surveys the practical and symbolic uses of falcons in human culture in new and exciting ways.
Helen Macdonald describes the complete history of the bird, ranging across the globe and over many millennia, as well as incorporating the latest scientific discoveries. There are chapters on falcon natural history; myth and legend; falconry; conservation; falcons in the military, in urban settings and the corporate world. Along the way the reader will discover how falcons were mobilized in secret military projects, their links with espionage, the Third Reich and the space programme, and how they’ve featured in erotic stories. The book explores their veneration as gods in Ancient Egypt, their role as cultural icons in the Middle East, and their recruitment by the advertising industry to promote all manner of products, from photocopiers to jet planes.
Falcon combines in-depth practical, personal and scientific knowledge of falcons with a strong analytical perspective on the place of these birds in human history. It will be enjoyed by specialists and non-specialists alike: lovers of the countryside, birdwatchers or anyone who has ever wondered why falcons are so compelling.

Crow

(Animal Series)
Boria Sax
Publisher: Reaktion Books Ltd, 2003 (на амазон.ком дата публикации – 2004)
ISBN 1 86189 194 6
Number Of Pages: 184

In this vivid and enjoyable meditation on crows in art, literature and history, Sax (The Serpent and the Swan: The Animal Bride in Folklore and Literature), a scholar at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York, gives the genus Corvus the enthusiastic treatment it deserves. Crows have always preoccupied people-as tricksters and crop thieves, as harbingers of death or creators of the world, as models of marital fidelity and bearers of prophecy. But Sax’s book is more than an endearing act of monomania. Part of a series that includes odes to dogs, ants, snakes and other cardinal companions and familiar pests, this volume emphasizes that animals and allegory are still fundamental to the human imagination. The 95 illustrations (27 in color) are beautifully reproduced: from a Japanese ink drawing of a plump crow bending plum boughs to contemporary photographs of the Yeoman Raven Master feeding his wards at the Tower of London, where they are believed to protect the English Crown. Sax can sound moralizing when he generalizes; in his discussion of Poe’s "The Raven" he asserts: "Few people ... stop to even consider what the poem might be about." The book’s organization-by region and epoch-is logical but not necessarily ideal. The inevitable overlaps in regional and historical views leads to a kind of redundancy rather than the kind of elaboration that might have arisen in a more free-ranging discussion. Sax is wholly successful, however, in transmitting the wonder and admiration with which he regards these iconic birds.

Crow Planet

Lyanda Lynn Haupt
Publisher: Little, Brown and Company; 1 edition, 2009
ISBN: 978-0-316-05339-6
240 pages

Haupt, former raptor rehabilitator and seabird researcher, embarks on an urban ornithological expedition to defend the honor of the crow, the ubiquitous bird whose corvid family precedes Homo sapiens by several million years and whose symbolic and actual role as a scavenger and liaison between life and death evokes reactions ranging from revulsion to awe. Attracted to the sight of the birds nesting in her backyard, the author follows them as they forage in the moss along neighborhood streets and cavort in a nearby wildlife preserve. Her forays into Seattle's tenacious wild demonstrate evidence of the crow community's social complexity, their extensive vocabulary and fierce loyalty to their mates and species, Haupt enlivens her observations with tidbits from crow mythology and history, discovering that their bad press dates to the 14th-century outbreak of the bubonic plague when the birds scavenged the dead bodies lying in the streets, beginning, horribly, with the eyeballs. Despite some awkward prose, Haupt succeeds in humanizing the object of her naturalist obsession and affection.

Pigeon

(Animal Series)
Barbara Allen
Publisher: Reaktion Books Ltd, 2009
ISBN-10: 1861895135
ISBN-13: 978-1861895134
Number Of Pages: 237

Pigeon is an exploration of the natural and cultural history of the pigeon, and the evolution of its relationship with humanity through the ages. Written out of love and fascination with a humble yet important bird, Pigeon relates its cultural significance, as well as its similarities and differences to its close counterpart, the dove. While the dove is seen as a symbol of love, peace, and goodwill, the pigeon is commonly perceived as filthy and ill-mannered, a 'rat with wings'. To say the least, the pigeon has a bad reputation, but Barbara Allen offers several examples of the bird's importance - from a source of food and fertilizer, and a bearer of messages during times of war; to a pollution monitor and an aid to Charles Darwin in his pivotal research on evolutionary theory. She goes on to connect pigeons and doves with writers and poets from Shakespeare, Dickens, and Browning, to Beatrix Potter, Proust and I. B. Singer, who she shows have all celebrated the birds' beauty and attributes. Readers will find in Pigeon an enticing exploration of the historical and contemporary bonds between humans and these two unique and closely-related birds, bonds which have been in existence since their domestication over 3,000 years ago. Allen intends to correct the many stereotypes about pigeons and doves with hopes that the rich history of the relationship and the acknowledgement of what is one of the oldest human-animal partnerships will be both admired and celebrated.

Owls of the United States and Canada
A Complete Guide to Their Biology and Behavior

Text and Photographs by Wayne Lynch
Publisher: The Johns Hopkins University Press (2007)
ISBN-10: 0-8018-8687-2
ISBN-13: 978-0-8018-8687-4
264 pages

There is no group of birds more mysterious and fascinating than owls. The loudmouths of the raptor world, they peep, trill, toot, bark, growl, shriek, whistle, chittle, whoop, chuckle, boom, and buzz. Indeed, very few actually "hoot." They have become the stuff of lore and legend—from the Roman myth that an owl foot could reveal secrets to the First Nations belief that an owl feather could give a newborn better night vision. But the truth about owls is much more exciting.
In this gorgeous book, celebrated natural history writer and wildlife photographer Wayne Lynch reveals the secrets of this elusive species with stunning photographs, personal anecdotes, and accessible science. The photos alone are masterpieces. Unlike most published owl photos, which are portraits of birds in captivity, the vast majority of these were taken in the wild—a product of the author-photographer's incredible knowledge and patience.
Lynch complements the photos with a wealth of facts about anatomy, habitat, diet, and family life. For each of the nineteen species that inhabit Canada and the United States, he provides a range map and a brief discussion of its distribution, population size, and status. Lynch debunks myths about owls' "supernatural" powers of sight and hearing, discusses courtship rituals, and offers personal tips for finding owls in the wild.
From the great horned to the tiny elf owl, this amazing volume captures the beauty and mystery of these charismatic birds of prey.

Т.к. на mybirds есть любители совей :) я рискнула выложить эту книгу, хотя бы за великолепные фотографии. Книга отсканирована качественно, текст хорошо читается и копируется.

Hormones and Reproduction of Vertebrates
Volume 4: Birds

David O. Norris, Kristin H. Lopez
Publisher: Elsevier Inc.
First edition, 2011
ISBN: 978-0-12-374932-1 (Set)
ISBN: 978-0-12-374929-1 (Volume 4)
267 pages

Birds are unique among vertebrates in that they are highly
adapted for flight in terms of their anatomy, physiology, and
behavior. Further, they are possibly the most visible
vertebrate species to humans in being strongly diurnal,
often brightly colored, and extremely easy to observe in
their natural habitats. Consequently, birds have been
a favorite target for biologists interested in studying the
relationships among hormones, natural environmental
factors, and reproduction in wild vertebrates.
Distributed in a wide range of habitats globally, all birds
are characterized physiologically by endothermy, internal
fertilization, and obligate oviparity. Females produce relatively
small numbers of large yolky eggs, and embryonic
development generally requires elevated temperatures,
provided by brooding. Thus, considerable parental care is
involved in the successful reproduction of most bird species.
This avian volume on hormones and reproduction
focuses both on bird species in wild populations and on
captive birds, in which reproductive physiology and
behavior may be studied relatively easily. We begin with
a chapter on the neuroendocrine regulation of reproduction
and follow with chapters on testicular and ovarian
functions. Following is a discussion of the maternal role
in determining the hormonal and nutrient composition of
the egg and its significance for successful reproduction.
Chapters on the hormones involved in stress, courtship
and mating behavior, parental behavior, and migration
and reproductive cycles represent the emphases of the
study of bird reproduction over the past several
decades. Finally, the importance of endocrine disruption
in bird populations by anthropogenic chemicals is
discussed.
