Parrots of the World (Princeton Field Guides)

Joseph M. Forshaw
Illustrated by Frank Knight
Publisher: Princeton University Press, 2010
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0691142858
ISBN-13: 978-0691142852
328 pages

From the macaws of South America to the cockatoos of Australia, parrots are among the most beautiful and exotic birds in the world--and also among the most endangered. This stunningly illustrated, easy-to-use field guide covers all 356 species and well-differentiated subspecies of parrots, and is the only guide organized by geographical distribution--Australasian, Afro-Asian, and neotropical. It features 146 superb color plates depicting every kind of parrot, as well as detailed, facing-page species accounts that describe key identification features, distribution, subspeciation, habitat, and status. Color distribution maps show ranges of all subspecies, and field identification is further aided by relevant upperside and underside flight images. This premier field guide also shows where to observe each species in the wild, helping make this the most comprehensive and user-friendly guide to the parrots of the world.

Parrots: A Guide to Parrots of the World

Tony Juniper, Mike Parr
Publisher: Christopher Helm, 1998
Language: English
ISBN: 978-0-7136-6933-6
584 pages

This is the first book created primarily for the field identification of parrots, one of the most familiar and colorful groups of birds. From the mighty. macaws to the diminutive pygmy parrots, the 350 species of parrots include cockatoos, parakeets, lovebirds, and Budgerigar. Most are brightly colored or even gaudy, but a few are drab, and some are nocturnal and flightess. Parrots, found throughout most of the warmer regions of the world, occur in greatest numbers in Australasian and South America.
This book includes 88 superb color illustrations of every species and most identifiable subspecies of parrot, as well as range maps of their locations. It offers many firsthand insights into the ecology of each species, vocalizations, life cycle characteristics, and geographical variation. It also provides up-to-date information on the conservation status of those species of parrots that are threatened or endangered.

The many advances in psittacine medicine since the previous edition was published in 1996 are reflected in this Manual, which has been updated and rewritten under the direction of a new editorial partnership. The extended use of colour photographs adds to the extra usefulness of this successor to a well loved volume.
Clinical examination is presented in a logical, highly practical way, with integrated photographs of key features. The chapter ends with notes on critical and emergency cases. The basic techniques of injection, crop tubing, microchipping, and wing, claw and beak clipping are described and illustrated. The role of clinical pathology is demonstrated, including colour images of haematology and cytology, and a step-by-step post-mortem examination procedure is presented. Diagnostic imaging encompasses radiography, ultrasonography and endoscopy, with views o both normal abd abnormal presentations. Surgical principles plus procedures for both soft and hard tissues are then described.
Subsequent chapters cover systemic illnesses and disease by individua organ system. These are designed to be read in their entirety or to be referred to as needed.
For general practitioners the most commonly seen psittacine patients are small parrots, Cockateils and Budgerigars. A chapter is therefore devoted to dealing with common problems in these small patients. This practical approach to the sick bird is extended in an appendix of diagnostic algorithms for common presentations such as 'fluffing up', fitting and feather damage.
The editors both developed their interests in avian medicine from general practice and this has resulted in a practical, easy-to-use and relevant guide to psittacine medicine.

Raptor: Research and Management Techniques

David M. Bird, Keith L. Bildstein (Editor), David R. Barber, Andrea Zimmerman (Assistant Editor)
Publisher: Hancock House Publishers Ltd (January 2007)
ISBN-10: 0888396392
ISBN-13: 978-0888396396
463 pages

Description:
This is the much anticipated and thoroughly updated version of the popular but long out of print "Raptor Management Techniques Manual". Produced by the Raptor Research Foundation, this is a comprehensive work designed for use by raptor researchers and conservationists and natural-resource managers around the world. Each chapter has been authored by experts in the field and has undergone rigorous review. Not an all-inclusive manual or detailed 'how-to' book, this new work reflects the state of the art in raptor research, with up-to-date information on various techniques, and numerous references to additional sources for details and cautions regarding various field and laboratory techniques and management tools. Beginning with a general review of the field of raptor research, it includes insights into field-study techniques, information on the energetics, physiology, pathology, and toxicology of raptors; it covers reduction of management and researcher disturbance, mitigation, population monitoring at migration watchsites, captive breeding, the augmentation of wild populations, and rehabilitation, and concludes with chapters on public education and legal considerations. This book will enhance standardisation in the field, speed improvement in techniques and help those who study and manage birds to better protect them.

BSAVA Manual of Raptors, Pigeons and Passerine Birds

Edited by: John Chitty and Michael Lierz
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons, 2008
ISBN-10: 1905319045
ISBN-13: 978-1905319046
412 pages

This book updates completely the information on birds of prey and pigeons and doves found in the BSAVA Manual of Raptors, Pigeons and Waterfowl, published twelve years ago. The advent of the new BSAVA Manual of Farm Pets, which encompasses waterfowl, has allowed a change in focus to feature passerine birds in detail for the first time.
The Manual starts with the all-important area of husbandry for the three groups, including those kept as working birds as well as ornamental and pet species. More general topics, such as handling, examination, diagnostic procedures and surgery are dealt with across the groups, with notes as required on specific differences. An excellent chapter is included on endoscopy and endosurgery - a major technique for avian patients.
The specialist section on raptor disease is very detailed, including an in-depth chapter on foot disease, especially bumblefoot. Recent interest in captive breeding is reflected in detailed chapters on reproduction and paediatrics. The sections dedicated to pigeons and passerine birds look at birds at both the individual and flock level.
A wealth of international expert authors, and the BSAVA Manual trademark practical approach and superb full-colour images throughout make this book a wonderful addition to the practice bookshelf.

Anatomical & Clinical Radiology of Birds of Prey: Including Interactive Advanced Anatomical Imaging

Jaime Samour MVZ PhD Dip ECAMS (Editor), Jesus L. Naldo DVM (Editor)
Publisher: Saunders Ltd.; 1 edition (March 1, 2007)
ISBN-10: 0702028029
ISBN-13: 978-0702028021
300 pages

"It is no exaggeration to state that this book will change the lives of all veterinary surgeons regularly involved with raptors, with respect to radiograph interpretation......This book contains practical, useful information that can be used on a daily basis by the avian veterinarian, and fully deserves to become a standard textbook in both avian and wildlife practices." - Michael Stanford, The Veterinary Record, July 14 2007

"The aim of this text according to the authors was to produce a reference atlas on the anatomical and clinical radiology of birds of prey that could be used within the veterinary profession. Samour and Naldo certainly go some way to achieving this goal with an extensive catalogue of standardised radiographic images. The book can essentially be divided into four main sections; radiographic technique, anatomical radiology of representative species, clinical radiographic conditions and advanced imaging techniques. The latter is touched on in the text but expanded upon in far greater detail within the interactive DVD that is included.

In conclusion this book is a well illustrated and informative text with something to offer both the student and the specialist raptor practitioner. It helps to strengthen our foundation of knowledge in avian and raptor medicine at a time when, as Nigel Harcourt Brown says in the foreword, "cutting edge topics based on small numbers of cases” seem to be the order of the day. I would recommend all veterinarians involved
with birds of prey to purchase this book." - FALCO, The Newsletter of the Middle East Falcon Research Group, Issue No.30 Autumn 2007

• This is the first atlas to include a chapter on common radiographic mistakes to help the specialists working in this field!
• Exceptionally high-quality images provide an invaluable reference for clinical practice.
• A color photograph of a particular clinical condition is presented together with the radiograph to show the layers of the condition.
• Coverage of advanced clinical anatomy imaging includes ultrasonography, computed axial tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.
• Includes a unique section on magnification radiography.

Encyclopedia of Amazon Parrots

Klaus Bosch, Ursula Wedde
Publisher: TFH Publications (October 25, 1984)
ISBN-10: 0876668716
ISBN-13: 978-0876668719
Number of page: 208 pages

Amazons are one of the groups of parrots most appreciated by pet lovers and bird breeders. They are easy to tame and train; they can be bred; and they are one of the least expensive groups of the larger parrots. The authors have written this book from first hand experience, and each bird is surveyed from its life and capture in the wild, through importation, quarantine, and acclimation, to the requirements for keeping it as a pet and breeding it in captivity. In a systematic treatment, each species or subspecies is discussed, with a range map for each and a supplemental gallery of photographs. The photos are remarkable and comprehensive, and makes identification of each subspecies simple and accurate. Instances of captive breeding are followed by assessments of the characteristics of each particular subspecies.
